Redmond, the home of Microsoft is one of the top 20 most affluent areas in the state of Washington due to the high percentage of technology workers in the city. It is situated on the far eastern edge of Seattle. The estimated population in the 2003 Census was just over 46,000.

Originally named Salmonberg for the large numbers of salmon in the rivers and streams, Redmond took up the name of one of the first settlers, Luke McRedmond. For a short time in the early 1880’s, the area was renamed Melrose after a popular area inn. However, McRedmond became the postmaster and renamed it to Redmond in 1883.

Though Microsoft is the best known company headquartered in Redmond, others include Data I/O Corporation, Nintendo of America, Concur and Eddie Bauer. With over 1000 acres in 23+ public parks, Redmond has invested in outdoor recreation for its citizens. There are more than 17 miles of hiking trails, including the Sammamish River Trail and the Burke-Gilman Trail.
With homes averaging around $550,000, Redmond is affordable for most of the technology workers living there. From 2 bedroom condominiums in the $250,000 range, to single family homes in between $500,000 and $700,000, there are a multitude of housing choices.


Commute

The Redmond to Downtown commute is 16 miles and take around 45 minutes. Luckily, the east side economy is booming and many resident of Redmond only have to commute a few miles.

School District: Lake Washington School District

Schools: Public schools for Redmond are numerous and include Alexander Graham Bell Elementary School, Lake Washington 414 Middle, and Lake Washington High School. Private schools in the area include:
