About Madrona

The Madrona area of Seattle is sometimes also called Leschi, which borders it. Bounded on the east by Lake Washington and the west by Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Madrona is east of downtown Seattle. Main thoroughfares include E. Union, E. Cherry, and Madrona Drive. The area is named after the Arbutus species of trees.

The 2000 census indicates 5097 residents in the area, with a mix of African American, Asian and Caucasian. The diverse makeup of Madrona helped to develop the area’s motto: “The Peaceable Kingdom.” Parks and playgrounds include Madrona Park, Madrona Playground and Powell Barnett Playground.

Though there are restaurants and shops in the area, it is mostly residential and heavy shopping would require a 5 minute drive west toward town. The homes are a mix of price ranges, with water views commanding over $1 million, while inland homes are in price ranges from the $200,000’s. The Raymond Ogden Mansion, in the Madrona/Leschi area, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Single family homes and condominiums make up the Madrona area, with those at the lower end of the price range tending to be more condominium units. Single family homes tend to start more in the $400,000+ price range. There are many older homes, but new homes are also being built.

Commute

The commute from Madrona to downtown should only take about 10 minutes.
